    Structural engineers at the University of California, Los Angeles are hoping to design earthquake-resistance buildings and communities. They are using data and computer modeling to design structures able to withstand major earthquake events. These models are meant to guide safety inspections following earthquakes and help engineers locate “hotspots” more quickly. Part of the “Science Nation” series.

    Engineers and architects are creating bridges that combine the best of both art and design. Bridges are no longer just a tool to get from one side of the river to the other. Some bridges have the goal of being aesthetically pleasing and efficient for pedestrians. Others rely on the cantilever design to span a distance equivalent to three and a half jumbo jets. Bridges are often classified by their structure and how the forces of tension, compression, bending, torsion and shear are distributed. Shows how designs vary depending on the function of the bridge, the environmental factors, the materials, and technology used to construct them.

    Hurricane Sandy was the deadliest of the 2012 hurricane season and was the second costliest hurricane in U.S. history. University of Washington civil engineer Dorothy Reed and her team received a grant from the National Science Foundation to study how Hurricane Sandy affected the infrastructure of the New York Metropolitan area, including the power and transit systems. Reed and her team area creating highly detailed maps to construct a comprehensive street-by-street view of Sandy’s devastation.

    Already parts of the world suffer from lack of water, and with increasing demand it's expected to get worse. To better understand and predict drought, thirty universities are collaborating in a multidisciplinary effort called the Shale Hills Project. Among the studies, is field research following the life cycle of water along the Susquehanna River Basin. With support from the National Science Foundation, civil engineer Chris Duffy and his team at Penn State are tracking several aspects of rainfall to better understand the relationship between the flow of water, drought prone areas, and urban populations.

    A Category 5 hurricane is a monster of a storm that most people would want to avoid. But, Civil Engineer Arindam Chowdhury actually recreates those monster hurricane force winds in hopes of helping people better prepare for the real thing. With support from the National Science Foundation, Chowdhury and his team at Florida International University and the International Hurricane Research Center designed a 15 foot tall Wall of Wind (WOW). The goal is to see if low rise structures and building materials can withstand the same wind forces they would face in a full-blown hurricane. Architects have built skyscrapers and invented the elevator and escalator to help navigate the height of these structures.     For centuries, land travel was restricted to how fast and far humans or animals could walk. In the 19th century, the invention of the bicycle transferred human energy to a set of wheels. During the Industrial Revolution, the invention of the steam engine led to the railroad, a change in transportation that created the tourist industry. In the early 20th century, the invention of the automobile forever changed how humans travel, and with the assembly line, Henry Ford forever changed how goods are manufactured.

    Using mud, clay, and tons of stone, ancient civilizations built buildings and monuments that are still standing today. The Egyptians built the Great Pyramid with an accurate measuring system, the ability to calculate areas and volumes of triangles, and a tremendous workforce that transported 1,000 tons of stone each day for 15 years. Other civilizations, such as the Romans, created marvels of engineering like the dome of the Pantheon, and built clean cities that included conveniences such as water management and sewers.
